And you’ll find great value for money, as this is one of the least expensive places to live in the UK with student discounts widely available.
Middlesbrough really buzzes with activity seven days a week, from vibrant shopping centres to the colourful bars, cafes, restaurants and nightclubs. There’s a big choice when it comes to entertainment.
You’ll find clubs, live music, a multi-screen cinema and comedy venues all around, as well as plenty of great bars - or try ten-pin bowling at Teesside Park, where there are plenty of shops and themed restaurants.
Near to Stewart Park is the Prissick Skate Plaza – recently voted the best skate park in the country, it recreates skate spots from around the world, including the USA and Spain.
Then again, you could join the army of fanatical local supporters at the Riverside Stadium, home of the Boro (Middlesbrough Football Club).
Out of town there’s Hartlepool Marina - the result of a £300m development - with award-winning tourist attractions, top-class shopping and wide sandy beaches.
Or why not visit nearby Yarm, a traditional market town complete with cobbled streets, exclusive boutiques and upmarket restaurants?
Albert Park, overlooked by some of the University’s residences, provides 100 acres of quiet green space for you to enjoy. By contrast, the park comes to life every summer when Middlesbrough Mela celebrates Asian culture.
Each year Middlesbrough Music Live presents a free, all-day music festival with over ten stages and more than ten hours of great music. The Thrills, Razorlight and the Editors have all made recent appearances.
And last but not least, Stockton’s International Riverside Festival showcases the talents of performers from around the world.
Night Life
The hub of student nightlife is the award-winning Students’ Union, with rock nights, cheesy pop, 60s, 70s and 80s nights, R&B, karaoke and much, much more.
The Middlesbrough Empire is famous for its Sugar Shack dance nights with guests such as DJs Roger Sanchez, John Kelley and the Shapeshifters.
Indie and live music nights feature heavily too with Club NME nights, recent gigs include Kaiser Chiefs, Artic Monkeys and The Ordinary Boys.
The town also boasts the Cornerhouse, a five-minute walk from the University, and the Arena - both great for clubbing and live music.
Middlesbrough Town Hall is the venue for more mainstream rock and pop. Acts have included The Undertones, Bloc Party and Van Morrison.
Comedy nights with the likes of Jimmy Carr, Jo Brand, Lee Evans, Paddy McGuinness and Dara O’Briain are also on the bill.
Out of town you’ll find the legendary Club M at Tall Trees in Yarm, attracting revellers from all over the UK to fill this 8,000-capacity venue every weekend. Regular events include Retro, Goodgreef and More.
Guest DJs and live PAs feature heavily on the agenda with Paul Taylor, Adam Sheridan and Eddie Halliwell making regular appearances.
Students' Union (The Terrace Bar) & Club M at Tall Trees
